A Career Beyond the Rules
This is not a résumé. Not a career story. Not a success story.
It is a route: a story about how detours can lead exactly where we were trying to go all along.
For a long time, I thought this story was about the places I had been. Eventually I realised those places were only the backdrop. The real journey was unfolding within me.
It is not about where I went. It is about who I became along the way.
“The rules were never the goal.”
Ten stations. Not a straight line, but the points that only became a story when I looked back.
I didn't leave because I wanted to see the world. I wasn't looking for adventure, and I had no idea where the road would take me.
I was very young when the moment came that I had to leave. All I could see then was what I was leaving behind, not what lay ahead. I had no plan, and for a long time, nowhere that truly felt like home.
What first felt like loss gradually became freedom. Over the years, I learned that home doesn't have to mean one country, one city or one address.
I had no idea then how much would begin with that departure.
“Some journeys begin before you know where you’re going.”
I often found myself in places where everyone around me seemed to know the rules, while I was still trying to understand them.
In new countries, communities and workplaces, I was often the one who didn't quite speak the language or know the customs. The one who had to find her place all over again.
I learned to observe, ask questions, read people's reactions and navigate unfamiliar situations. At first, I just wanted to fit in. Later, I realised that being an outsider allowed me to notice things others had stopped seeing.
Over time, finding my place became easier. The feeling of being an outsider didn't disappear, but it became more than a difficulty. It became a different perspective.
“Belonging everywhere starts with belonging nowhere.”
Living abroad brought me face to face not only with differences, but with my own limits. Sometimes silence would have been easier.
I encountered vulnerability, abuses of power and decisions I couldn't simply accept. Speaking up when something felt unfair wasn't always comfortable. Sometimes it led to conflict. Sometimes I paid the price.
I learned that standing up for myself doesn't always have to be loud. Sometimes it simply means refusing to say yes to something you cannot stand behind.
I didn't win every battle. Some losses left me in difficult situations. But I never wanted to lose myself.
“Silence was never my strategy.”
My career didn't begin in an office.
I learned how different parts of a workplace operated from the inside and was soon trusted with reception and financial responsibilities. Then came different countries and international projects.
Over time, I trained colleagues, led teams and took responsibility for operations and finance. I had no master plan. I learned through experience what it means to be responsible for other people's work.
“Before I built a career, I built a horizon.”
I was already working as a leader abroad when I was offered another management position. From the outside, it might have seemed like the obvious next step.
But after years of constant movement and fresh starts, I wanted a different way of living. That life had given me so much, yet I chose to leave it behind.
I didn't come home because I had run out of opportunities. I came home because I wanted to live differently.
“Who am I when the title disappears?”
I returned home with international leadership experience, yet found myself almost starting from scratch in the multinational corporate world.
Abroad, what mattered was what you could do. At home, I often felt the weight of qualifications, connections and internal politics. Over the years, I rebuilt my career, sometimes even supporting things I believed were wrong.
Then I reached a limit. Sometimes I said enough out loud. At other times, my body spoke before I did.
“Coming home was the beginning of another departure.”
Countries changed. Jobs changed. So did my roles. One thing stayed the same: I wanted to understand why things worked the way they did, and question them when I could imagine another way.
For years, adapting helped me move forward. Later, I learned that even adaptability has limits, and it was up to me to draw the line.
A. TYPICAL grew from that way of thinking. Not about rejecting rules, but about making room for possibilities.
“Freedom was never a place. It was a way of thinking.”
For a long time, I measured my journey in countries, cities and jobs. Now I see what connected them.
Starting over taught me independence. Different roles gave me new perspectives. Leading others showed me how much depends on people.
What once looked like a detour became valuable somewhere else. Only later did I see how the pieces connected.
“The ocean taught me movement. People taught me leadership.”
I didn't arrive at a country, a position or a final answer.
I arrived at the understanding that I didn't have to choose between the different parts of my experience. They all belong to me: the outsider who observed, the leader who made decisions, and the person who sometimes started everything over again.
I no longer look to the next role to tell me who I am. I start with what I've lived, what I've learned and who I've become.
“Every version of me was necessary.”
Looking back, job titles are not what matter most. It's the people I worked with, the moments when I could help, and the knowledge I passed on.
Now I'm giving shape to my own ideas. I don't know what each will become, but I'm no longer trying to fit everything I know into a predefined career path.
This story ends here. The journey doesn't.
“The map shows the journey. The story shows who I became.”
